he begins his investigation in a chapter titled ” ‘my play is a hosepipe’: contextualizing the making of frankie and johnny in the united states”. this is a great chapter to go to for information on another area of his career, specifically, his work in film and tv.
another excellent chapter is called “caribbean jazz.” mcnally is totally himself in this chapter, narrating in first person, which is a refreshing change from his somewhat near-autobiographical work. he explores how jazz came to america and suggests a fundamental african influence on jazz.
these sections are enlightening and revealing, particularly the piece “crazy heat: writing for people who hate fun.” it’s written from mcnallys perspective as a gay playwright. the piece is utterly hilarious. mcnally suggests that the special nature of his writing is that the characters in the plays he writes are made of flesh and blood and move about. they are not just types.
he is a dramatist first and foremost. mcnally loves the art of telling stories. he loves to visit human beings, to talk with them, sing with them. he loves to hear their stories. he loves the characters he creates, like frankie valli, the con man/performer who is out of work in the 19th century town of gophermere, missouri.
frankie is a patzer, a phony, who poses as the son of a welsh coal miner who ran away from home and makes a living as a performer who dresses up in a fancy outfit and sings with an italian ensemble. he takes his young lover for a ride in his fancy car (a pontiac) which ends in an adventure in the frozen forest.
