it took some time but the final breakthrough was not that difficult. i knew that the main message was always a randomized 16 bit number with a length of 160 bits. the first thing to look for was the start of the message. i noticed that there were two keywords that always appeared: “yes” and “no”. sure enough, when i decrypted the first line, the first thing i saw was “yes”. then i noticed that the word “yes” appeared by itself after each number in the line. that was a clue that each line was a different answer.
the more i looked, the more i found. after a few lines, i saw more “yes” and “no” and “yes” by itself and the solution started to become clear. as i looked at the next line, the next “yes” appeared and then i realized that all of the lines in a row contained “yes” and the next line contained “no”. this is the encryption of a particular row. it continued in this way until the cipher text was encrypted. this was a very clever application of encryption. not only did it hide the data but it made it easy to find the data. there was an encrypted indicator after the answer. but the encryption was randomized. so, it took time to figure out how to decrypt the encrypted indicator. it was pretty simple once i figured it out.
why are we ignoring the most basic rule of all security? the answer is that security is only as good as the security of its weakest point. and the weakest point of any computer system is usually the keyboard. the only way to truly secure anything is to take the keyboard off the computer. unfortunately, this is not possible in most cases. but you can use a spare keyboard to attack your system. why not simply give a spare computer to all your users? with this in mind, i think that the idea of a smartcard, even one with a battery, is a bad idea. if you use a keyboard for every terminal, then the only way to get to the computer is to use the keyboard. if the computer is on a rack, then the terminal keyboard is not your only way in.
and so it is an issue of both the need to try to reach out to voters and the need to give them some fiscal relief. it is, i would say, an opportunity to demonstrate that the party has learned some lessons from its losses in 2006. one is that to try to appeal to the left-wing, and even some of the moderate centre-left electorate, is an electoral disaster. the other is to try to make the case to the voters that the republicans’ spending cuts have made things better by reducing the deficit. the party is also finding that its “solutions” — that is, its proposals to reduce the deficit, and hence debt, by taxing the rich — are not well-received by voters. this is the problem that the republicans have with the white house budget, which they are not going to like. it has limited potential because it is not based on a clear philosophy of economics. it is a compromise that seems to be about as close to fiscal sanity as the democrats are willing to come.
one of the political problems that the republicans have is that they do not have much of a brand. they are “the party of fiscal responsibility” or “the party of small government”, but that is about as far as you can get without resorting to scare-mongering. people who worry about deficit spending may have voted for the democrats but, when push comes to shove, they might just go to the democrats if they don’t like what the republicans are doing. it is a problem that the democrats, too, have: they have lost the message of the clinton years, and are trying to get back to that. but they are struggling to find the magic formula of what the clinton era was about.
