again, the big 12 is as viable as it is because of the strength of the 8 schools in it. if you take away the texas schools from the big xii, it would look very much like the big 10. in fact, i think the big ten could have easily swallowed up the big 12 in the late 70’s (i actually think that purdue would be a good fit for the big 10 as well) and in the early 80’s when expansion kicked in. plus, the fact that the big 10 wanted the ohio schools in the late 70’s means they should have had the foresight to expand in the early 80’s and get the big east and big xii. the big 10 was a bit shortsighted in wanting to grow at the expense of quality opponents, so they got stuck with what they got. but, that is why the big 10 is the strongest conference in america in terms of overall $$$$ and not the b1g.

i honestly think the b1g would be fine with the acc as a backup plan if the big 12 is unable to pull itself together. its just the fact that the acc is almost certainly the second best league that the big 10 can get. the only way that i think this would not be true would be if the acc was to be run by a bunch of incompetent fools. then, i think the big 10 would immediately take them out and get a bunch of other schools. if the acc was really run by a bunch of incompetent fools though, then i think that the big 10 would have a better chance at grabbing the acc and throwing in the two schools that i mentioned above. that said, the acc is not going to get bigger. it has its own demographic issues and is, in all likelihood, going to run out of schools if it keeps growing at the rate that it has been. another issue is that the acc is in a time warp. it was built around miami, but miami has gotten sick of it. they have asked to go to the b1g and the acc doesnt want to cut them off. i dont blame miami for it, but miami is more interested in independence than $$$$ and thats a position that should not be taken lightly. so, i believe that the acc is going to stick around for a long time. we dont know the current financial status of the big ten, but the acc is currently a $100 million per year league on a $700 million per year budget (that was the bcs figure), and they arent showing any signs of slowing down.
