AutoCAD Architecture is the foundation of the AutoCAD program, the visual interface that is common to all AutoCAD applications. When you design with AutoCAD, you’re using a series of drawings. Each one is a separate drawing. Each one has layers. Each layer is named, and you can turn layers on and off when you draw. In AutoCAD, you draw a series of layers. Each layer is a view of the same 3D object.

You use the AutoCAD Architecture window to enter commands. The Design and Construction window is one of these commands. It enables you to enter commands to create and edit drawings, including 3D drawings.

NOTE: In some AutoCAD applications, such as Microstation for Windows, Architecture is known as Create and you create 3D drawings.

To create an AutoCAD Architecture drawing:

Start AutoCAD. Choose Design tab⇒ Architecture. Select a folder on the hard disk to serve as a default folder. (Otherwise, AutoCAD selects a folder you specify when you start AutoCAD.) Click OK.

The Select Folder dialog box appears. Click the + button. The Select Folder dialog box displays the contents of the folder. You can select a folder to serve as the default folder. Click OK.

The drawing area displays the Select Folder dialog box. (This dialog box does not appear if you start AutoCAD without selecting a folder. Instead, a 3D View window opens.)

Enter a name for the new drawing, and click OK. AutoCAD adds the new drawing to the list of the drawing area.

To close the dialog box, click OK.

To see a list of all AutoCAD Architecture drawings, click the 3D View button on the Design tab and choose Open Drawing List.

To delete a drawing, right-click the drawing in the Drawing Area and choose Delete.

To view a list of all of the drawings in the drawing area, click the 3D View button on the Design tab and choose Open Drawing List.

Plotter
AutoCAD has several optional plotters. The basic plotter is the DesignCenter, which is part of the applications’ installation, and allows users to see a drawing from a fixed-size perspective. It can be connected to a computer monitor or projector, but can also display on a TV or be embedded in other applications. More advanced plotters are provided as plug-ins, called Plotters. A plug-in can be installed by selecting a specific type of plotter from the Plotters list box on the ribbon bar and choosing Install. Plug-ins cannot be reinstalled unless the host application is reinstalled. There are three types of plotters: Path, 3D LISP, and Internet. Path plotters are similar to DesignCenter and display only a portion of the drawing, much like a camera takes pictures from a fixed perspective. Internet plotters are similar to DesignCenter and display the entire drawing. 3D LISP plotters are similar to the 3D LISP plotters used on the 3D Desktop.

COM+ and other COM-based technologies may be used to allow external plug-ins to communicate with AutoCAD. AutoLISP, Visual LISP, or ObjectARX is often used for this purpose. COM+ also allows a program to be easily integrated into AutoCAD via COM. Some examples of this are the Word document plug-ins that can be embedded in any AutoCAD drawing, or any program that exports a graphical object, such as the export feature in Adobe Illustrator. Additionally, COM+ allows external users to access any program via COM.

AutoCAD’s GUI contains some features that can be customized. These include the toolbars, ribbon, menu bar, status bar and palette windows. The user can change the appearance of the windows, the color of the palette, the type of menu options, their placement, their tab style, their menus, and their toolbars. The menu, toolbar and ribbon are customizable through COM+ technology.
